SVEN "NIK" DESSLE

I TURN PHRASES.

INTO BRANDS PEOPLE LOVE.

I write copy that makes people feel smart for wanting what you can give them.

I’m happy to lead teams, and at my best when we're all creating together.

I'm eager for new projects and challenges.

HERE'S WHERE I'VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING SO FAR:

November 2022 – Present

FREELANCE WRITING and CONSULTING – San Francisco, CA

Clients include a global staffing firm, a fintech SaaS startup, a small business lender, a cybersecurity provider, a boutique hotel, and a digital marketing agency. (Details on request.)

March 2014 – November 2022

BRAND COPY LEAD – Prezi – San Francisco, CA

Prezi's SaaS platform helps people create moving visual stories through interactive presentations, videos, and infographics. For nine years, I developed and stewarded our brand voice, wrote countless campaigns, and mentored teams of writers in our various audience-driven styles of copy.

March 2012 – March 2014

SENIOR COPYWRITER, S.E.O. – Walmart.com – San Bruno, CA

In this role, I learned to balance the aesthetics of writing for humans with the mechanics of writing for search engines. Admittedly, S.E.O. is not my favorite, but for a huge global entity such as Walmart, it can be profitable on a macroeconomic scale.

February 2008 – September 2011

CREATIVE DIRECTOR, COPY – Lift Agency – San Francisco, CA

LIFT is a “results agency” that combines direct-marketing best practices with innovative approaches to driving response. As Creative Director, I led a small team of writers on a vast variety of projects, presented our work to clients, and consistently won the new control versions.

December 2006 – February 2008

ADVERTISING WRITER – Walmart Stores – Brisbane, CA

Walmart Stores had a satellite advertising office in Brisbane, CA. I was the senior writer on a team of 14 creatives tasked with the mega-chain’s retail and print campaigns. I reported directly to the Editorial Director and got heavily involved in the company’s big “Spark” rebrand.

November 2004 – December 2006

PRODUCT COPYWRITER – Walmart.com – Brisbane, CA

Walmart.com is the online outlet for the world’s largest retailer. I was initially hired to write product descriptions for the site’s massive catalog, but was soon promoted to its marketing team to work on taglines, campaign themes, and naming.

February 2004 – September 2004

SENIOR COPYWRITER – Haggin Marketing – Sausalito, CA

Haggin Marketing was considered the top catalog and retail advertising shop in the country. I met weekly with my clients to develop merchandising stories around their products, and also worked heavily on the agency’s new-business pitches.

December 2002 – February 2004

SENIOR COPYWRITER – Safeway Stores – Pleasanton, CA

Safeway had an image problem: Old infrastructure and tired advertising clichés made the brand feel drab and unsavory compared to fresh faces like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. I was hired to bring humanity and sophistication to the company’s voice.

EVEN MORE EXPERIENCE

I've also created messaging for Smith & Hawken, Quokka Sports, Gazoontite.com, and Backroads Active Travel, not to mention loads of freelance clients.

SCHOOLIN'

I went to California State University at Chico and studied Journalism, Public Relations, and Tourism Business Management. Plus played soccer and had a whole lot of outdoor fun.

LASTLY, WHAT IF I TOLD YOU…

· I once had to eat a bowl of sacrificial horse meat in a village on Sumba Island

· Our “haunted” New Orleans B&B was in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

· We went overseas for a short vacation and accidentally came home with a baby
